A1C
- Known as Glycosylated Hemoglobin or HbA1C.
- An average blood glucose level measured over the previous 3 months and useful in evaluating how well an individual manages diabetes.
- A1C test is based on the attachment of glucose to hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
- A1C test is the primary test used for diabetes management and diabetes research.
- The test can be done either in clinics or at home.
- Result is reported as a percentage.
- A1C level in normal people is below 5.7 %, in diabetes 6.5% or above, and in prediabetes 5.7 to 6.4%.
- People with diabetes can reduce the risk of diabetes complications by keeping A1C levels below 7%.
